A Solar Farm on the School Roof
When Cedar Valley School District installed 220 solar panels on the roof of its middle school, board members hoped mainly to reduce a $48,000 annual electricity bill. Two years later, the panels had done that — but they had also generated something less expected: a curriculum. Math teachers began using the district's real-time energy dashboard to teach ratios and rates. Science classes tracked seasonal irradiance. The district's youngest students, unable yet to compute kilowatt-hours, learned to read a graph.
Superintendent Lila Chen argues that the panels' educational value is now the largest return on the investment. 'We saved money in year one,' she says, 'but by year three, the dashboard had appeared in more than sixty lesson plans.' Chen concedes that Cedar Valley's success will not translate directly to every district — an old roof, a shaded lot, or long permitting delays can each derail a project — but she believes the underlying insight travels: infrastructure that students can see and measure teaches them differently than infrastructure that is hidden.
