The Bridge Builder

Amara wanted to build a bridge across the creek behind her house. Her older brother laughed. 'You're eight,' he said. 'Bridges are for engineers.' But Amara had a stack of scrap wood, three nails, and a small hammer she'd earned mowing lawns.

Her first bridge sagged. Her second collapsed the moment she stepped on it. On her third try, she sat by the creek and simply watched. The water rushed loudest at the middle. Small stones piled up near the bank. She realized the bridge needed to be strongest where the water was strongest.

Amara re-cut her boards. She braced the middle with two thick supports. When she finally walked across without wobbling, she didn't shout. She just smiled and thought, 'The river taught me.'
