In the summer of 1980, satellite images showed the Arctic Ocean covered by roughly seven million square kilometers of sea ice. Last summer, that number fell below four million. In forty years, an area of ice larger than India has quietly disappeared.

Ice matters — even for people who never see it. Bright white ice reflects sunlight back into space, keeping the planet cool. When ice melts, it exposes dark ocean water, which absorbs heat instead of reflecting it. Scientists call this a 'feedback loop': melting leads to more warming, which leads to more melting.

Coastal cities around the world watch sea levels creep upward. Researchers argue that the data leaves little room for doubt: the planet is warming, and the Arctic is one of its most sensitive alarm bells.
